FORMER GENOA TOWNSHIP POLICE OFFICER INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL ACTIVITY WHILE ON DUTY

April 5, 2018 – A Delaware County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against 59-year-old Mark Wells, a former Genoa Township Police Officer and Galena resident.

Wells was put on administrative leave after allegations arose that he had been improperly using workplace technology while on duty.

“Mr. Wells’ cruiser laptop was remotely accessed by another employee as part of a work-related function,” said Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien. “At that time, a video was in progress on the device, and an investigation was immediately started.”

During the course of the investigation, and while still on administrative leave, Wells retired. He had been with the department for nearly 30 years.

The indictment against Wells lists ongoing criminal behavior as happening from May 3, 2016 through April 25, 2017. He has been charged with unauthorized use of property – a fifth-degree felony.

An arraignment hearing is not yet set.
