JURY FINDS DELAWARE MAN GUILTY OF MURDER

A Delaware County jury has found 18-year-old Delaware resident, Rayshawn Lamont Anderson, guilty of murder for killing 38-year-old Alonzo Byrd.

On March 8 of this year, Anderson confronted Byrd outside his home in broad daylight before pulling out his firearm and shooting him five times in the middle of a public roadway. Delaware Police immediately arrested Anderson and, as he was 17 years old at the time, complaints were filed in Juvenile Court. Anderson was later transferred to Common Pleas Court to be tried as an adult.

After a 7-day trial, jurors returned guilty verdicts on 2 counts of murder with firearm specifications and 1 count of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises, a felony of the first degree. Anderson faces life in prison with parole eligibility at the earliest of 21 years. Sentencing is set for November 25, at 2:45 p.m. in front of Judge David Gormley.

“The life of Alonzo Byrd mattered. We are proud to stand up for all victims and hold individuals like Anderson accountable no matter their age.” Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Schiffel said. “Delaware Police Detective Dan Madden led the investigation, and justice was delivered in the courtroom by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Beth Matune who led the trial team with Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Chelsey Capezutti and Daniel Cogley.”
