August 26, 2025 – Today Delaware County Common Pleas Court Judge James P. Schuck sentenced Adam Stone, a 42-year-old Bucyrus man and former attorney, to 4.5 years (54 months) in prison for Telecommunications Fraud (a felony of the third degree) and Attempted Impersonation of a Peace Officer (a felony of the fourth degree).  Judge Schuck found that the offenses were serious enough that maximum, consecutive sentences are warranted.

Stone, a licensed attorney at the time, was hired by the victims to file a wrongful death lawsuit following the death of their son. Stone’s efforts in the wrongful death suit were ultimately unsuccessful. Stone then began fabricating a pursuit of an investigation into their son’s death and criminal prosecution with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. For more than a year he lied to the victims and used his position as an attorney to defraud them. His criminal scheme culminated when he impersonated an attorney with the Special Prosecutions Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s office while on the phone with the victims.

“Lawyers are not above the law.” Delaware County Prosecuting Melissa Schiffel said. “Stone irreparably damaged the reputation of the legal profession while destroying any hope and faith in the justice system that the victims are entitled to have as citizens of this great country. The travesty could have been avoided if Stone had simply told the truth.” Schiffel said.

This case was prosecuted by Delaware County Prosecutor Melissa Schiffel and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Chelsey Capezutti.
